Safety Top of Mind for 2007
Date: 01 March 2007
Author: IPWEA
Safety should be a top priority in 2007. To make things a little easier, the National Guide to Public Works & Services Safety has been updated and released to members of IPWEA during February.
The chart looks at managing health and safety risks in the workplace, including hazard identification, risk assessment and hazard control.
It also features information about working with chemicals, work method statements, lockout and tagging procedures, and onsite safety.
The Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Act 1991 states that employers have a duty to employees to provide information, instruction, training and supervision to enable workers to do their job safely without risk to their health. Employers found guilty of breaching duties in relation to their employees face a hefty maximum penalty of $242,000.
Local councils, civil contracting companies and senior works officers require OHS information specific to the public works and services industry. Displaying the chart is an easy way to keep on the right side of OHS law.
Hung where staff can access the useful information and tips daily will remind employees about correct practices and procedures, while at the same time helping to protect councils and public works contractors from costly injuries and illnesses.
Pro-Visual Publishing has produced the National Guide to Public Works & Services Safety in close consultation with IPWEA to ensure it meets the concerns of the public works and services sector.
Additional copies are available and all charts are produced and distributed without cost thanks to sponsorship from responsible businesses committed to raising health and safety awareness. For further information please call Pro-Visual Publishing on (02) 8272 2611, email enquiries@provisual.com.au.
